This Year's Reissue,
This review is from: This Year's Model Deluxe Edition (Audio CD)
Much as I love This Year's Model - Nick Lowe's pin-sharp but punchy production hasn't dated at all - I won't be shelling out on this repackage. This must be the fourth version on CD now at least! What are we supposed to do with previous versions now supposedly rendered obsolete by this latest 'definitive' issue (until the next one comes along in 2010)? And experience has proved that 'Previously Unreleased' material was kept in the can for the plain and simple fact that invariably it's substandard stuff. The original 1978 This Year's Model is a solid, perfect 5 out of 5 record musically, but gets less than zero for yet another pointless face-lift.

J. Chesterton says:
So you're not reviewing it at all. You haven't mentioned the live unreleased disc 2, the crisp sound or the swish packaging. I also have a previous issue, but this is a cracking addition.

Mike Stokes says:
If you think it was worth 5 stars when it came out why is it not worth 5 stars now? Quality is quality no matter how many times it has been reissued.

Mr Horseflesh you are being quite unreasonable. Poor Mr Costello has an expensive lifestyle to support and the poor record companies are having a very hard time right now with all the downloading and such like going on. Its mean-spirited of you to begrudge these fabulous hard-working human beings a few bob. There they are just trying to earn an honest profit when you come along with your puritan money-grabbing ways - I hazard a guess that you were the innocent victim of premature and rather harsh toilet-training hence your obsessive reluctance to part with your folding money. Now be good and cough up.

How can you say pointless face-lift? There's a whole period live recording which hasn't been released previously with this CD. Let's look at it this way: You buy a period live recording, and then get the original record with all the extra songs thrown in for good measure. How can you complain? I'm happy all this unreleased stuff surfaces.

I agree with Mr Horseflesh (and who wouldn't with a name like that) - this hasn't been re-released for a few days now. About time we had the super-duper deluxe edition, with the unreleased band in-jokes, replicated re-printed band food menus, demos of demos, etc etc yawnnnn.........

And if this is the only version available today, and the original was five stars, let's all apply our intellectual snobbery to diss this version and put off the next generation+1 since it was released (yes, seriously) from discovering this masterpiece.
