5.0 out of 5 stars Tragic and moving, 5 Feb 2012
This review is from: Birdsong [DVD] (DVD)
I thought this BBC adaptation was very good. I don't agree with other reviews complaining about the lead being emotionless, deadpan and no oomph! This is how he was supposed be portrayed; the man was dead from within because of events back in 1911. This is about a man who has lost his only love and doesn't know why! He's hardly going to be dashing! I thought the portrayal was magnificent and totally believable. Great supporting cast; Joseph Mawle was superb. Stunning battle/trench scenes and a very painful insight into the tragedy and blundering of July 1st 1916.
A truly superb film that is far far superior to a certain horse running around in no mans land, occasionally bumping into cardboard characters!

I totally agree - if you've read the book, then you will know that Eddie Redmayne portrayed the character perfectly. I was only disappointed in the fact that a few of the 'emotional' sections of the book were omitted, but as said by others, it has to be shortened for tv.

ANC You disagree about EVERYTHING that is not a perfectly faithful replication of some obscure piece of military hardware. Who cares if there is a bit of licence here and there if the gist and thrust of the novel is recreated reasonable accurately. ???

Thoroughly agree with your thoughtful and insightful review Kev Stock. A superb adaption of a very moving novel set in an era when values were so so different.
