4.0 out of 5 stars High hopes but..., 18 Nov 2007
This review is from: Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same [Special Edition] [DVD] [1976] (DVD)
Well, I got mine ahead of schedule this Saturday, and, though I don't know, maybe this is some stripped-off version, but the first dvd only has the original movie (albeit remastered in 5.1) WITHOUT the new songs in their correct places. So you still have black dog following rock'n'roll instead of Celebration Day. This was a major disappointment. The missing songs are, of course, on the second dvd, but why they couldn't have been included in the film eludes me. I think they should have re-edited the original film by cutting out the documentary parts, replacing them with as much of live footage as possible. I guess we'll be getting yet another version... the Definitive Song Remains the Same 3DVD DELUXE BOX.
Having said that, the extra material is interesting and the sound finally does justice to the band's energy on stage. A bit of a letdown, but, four stars simply for Led Zeppelin, the greatest rock band ever.
P.S. I had to upgrade my rating after viewing the dvd in full: simply mind-blowing! I never realized it sounded and looked this good, the old dvd was from a different planet, so to speak. So five stars it is, full show or not.

PRB says:
Apparently, the reason that the new material has not been edited into the original film is because Warners would not allow it, the original film had to remain unaltered, apart from the clean up and soundtrack remix.

well said PRB exactly correct.but quite why this is so i am not sure as of course LZ and PG were willy beggars and their album dal with atlantci only specified studio albums NOT live albums.so they (LZ/PG that is) were onto a real winner with TSRTS as all profits went into the swansong coffers and not atlantics.maybe this is why they cannot alter the film as maybe they sold the rights to someone else now owned, due to buy outs across the entire entertainment world,by warners-now.a real shame as of course a total re -edit including all the songs in correct order would be superb.but i doubt that even the correct footage exists for all the various angles and edits exists.look they even had to re record-re perform certain sections at the whos' soundstage as it was.hence the continuity guffaws in JPJs hair length and ridiculous wigto think they would think we didn,t notice-well i did and i reckon you did too ahahah! why he couldn,t wear the same stage clothes as requested for those 3 nights i simply beyond me as everyone else did.mayhe he was ultra sweaty and couldn,t stand the smell of foisty shirts after a night at the MSG ahah ! but anyway-i,ll not complain at any footage of the mighty LZ whatever the cause or reason.for this mighty band there is simply not enough filmed footage and yet other far less weaker bands you cannot move due to live dvds.funny that ? of course that was all down to quality control and retain the mystique and legend of LZ that still remains intact to this day.again unlike other inferior bands where you know way too much about them, all for the worse of course. hey ho !
