This review is from: Suppé: Overtures (Audio CD)
This is another cd that made the O.S.M/Dutoit combination so admired, coupled with the superb acoustics at St.Eustache in Montreal, and John Dunkerley as recording engineer,it`s a winning combination.
The Light Cavalry is probably one of the best interpretations you will ever hear, along with Poet and Peasant, but for me,the real surprise and gem,is the second overture "Fatinitza",why is this overture never heard in the concert hall,or recorded more often?.The wonderful elegant swagger and playing of the strings from the 5 min mark is one to die for, just absolutely sumptious, and elegant, this overture is a "real" find, and hats off to the person who decided to include it,and give us the chance to hear a different Suppe overture.
The "Jolly Robbers" is also one of those overtures we need to hear more often, and this recording really does do it justice,so along with the more familiar, this a cd to dip into,or play right through, sound, playing is absolutely pure gold, and one that leaves others way behind, sumptious, elegant strings, sonorous brass, wonderful woodwind playing, one of the best enginnerss in the business.
I were fortunate to meet Charles Dutoit at the Royal Festival Hall a few years ago, and I commented and complimented him on this particular cd,and the inclusion of Fatinitza, which I said was a real find, and he replied enthusiastically,it is one of those gems, that they really enjoyed putting onto cd,and that pleasure comes through......this is no ordinary Suppe overture complilation, this is THE BEST cd of his overtures, dont hesitate, click and buy it,you wont regret it.
