This review is from: London Conversations: The Best Of Saint Etienne (Audio CD)
All the new Saint Etienne reissues have reawakened my interest in this group. London Conversations is something of a last word in compilations, even for SE. For anyone casually interested, this would have to be the best overview of SE's very British indie-pop - attempts to categorise inevitably fail because they're neither as twee nor retro as you'd think. As a specific collectible of a great pop subgenre, this release is superb: great design and packaging (a very slim hardback book with paper inserts for the discs and a plethora of notes and pix) and remastering that improves on the original releases.
The first disc is a comp of their major single releases, concluding with the nice Xenomania remix of Burnt Out Car, their 2009 single Method Of Modern Love, and the fab Richard X remix of This Is Tomorrow.
The second disc features second-tier singles and album tracks, all very diverse and interesting. The dvd has most (if not all) of their official videos. Even fans who have most of SE's releases - like myself - will find something new or previously unknown here, and remind us once again of the extraordinary creativity and depth of Saint Etienne's catalogue. An essential collection.
