Repetitive, but fun,
This review is from: Goal! [DVD] (DVD)
If the script weren't as repetitive, I would have given this movie 5 stars.
I went to see it in a theater in Manila, Philippines, and was one of only a few people there who really knew much about English football (most people could only recognize Beckham, and someone behind me whispered, "what's the reserves?")...but in the end, everyone went out smiling. You don't need to know football to love this movie. You don't have to love Newcastle to love this movie--I'm a huge Liverpool fan! We all laughed, and I must say, had a tear or two in our eyes during some scenes.
Kuno Becker is so endearing in this film and offers a fantastic, believable performance. I think they made the right choice with him after Gabriel Garcia Bernal decided not to take the role of Santiago.
Everyone who worked on this movie did a nice job with the playing footage--a very tricky thing to do! A huge thank-you to FIFA and everyone in English football who cooperated to give this movie some realism. It made all the difference.
All in all: the storyline is not going to blow you away, but it's still very entertaining, sweet, and funny. (Bonus: Becker is also gorgeous in it.) I am really looking forward to buying this DVD and to seeing the sequels.
