well it is long. i would hazard a guess that this author has read Dickens. so many characters and it switches, twists, revises, does some more turns and you have to keep up! there is a great deal of detail to give the story texture and a strong sense of time and place. I was happy to stay with this meandering, confusing and beautiful written story. Then i turned the page and it was the end!!!! like so many modern authors she cannot write a good, clear ending that has integrity. i don't require an author to dot every i and cross every tee but it must have some coherence and integrity, i.e., not just make something up that does not have anything to do with what has gone before. With this book it was like falling off a cliff, no warning...........the end! which is why i have given the book 4 stars. i loved the book and she is a very gifted writer but that ending just won't do.

Myrth Russell says:
I agree, the ending of The Luminaries is not good; suddenly all the interest one has invested in keeping track, leads to a chasm.
