This review is from: Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen / Silver Nemesis [DVD] (DVD)
As an avid collector of the Doctor Who DVD range, there is some truth to the accusation that this year's range of classic releases has been somewhat dire. However, in retrospect, this seems only because 2|entertain appear to be saving some of the best until last and also allowing more time to restore some of the more damaged film prints. Still, when you look at some of this year's gems - Doctor Who - The Masque Of Mandragora [DVD], Doctor Who - Peladon Tales [DVD] and the under-rated Doctor Who - Myths And Legends [DVD] box set - not to mention the contestably fantastic 'The Chase' (included in Doctor Who - The Space Museum/The Chase [DVD]), the criticism seems unfair. The highlight of this year for me is undoubtedly this Cybermen box set. 'Revenge of the Cybermen' completes the brilliant Season 12, Tom Baker's first year as the Doctor, and is far better than its reputation deserves. It's almost an homage to an era of Who - Troughton and Pertwee - that is now firmly laid to rest with Baker's debut. 'Silver Nemesis' has always been a favourite of mine and is one of Season 25's four brilliant stories after three shaky years. The documentary 'Cheque, Lies and Videotape' took me back to my own youth of collecting dodgy VHS copies of the stories and is one of the best special features so far. My only gripe is that like 'Planet of Fire' (Doctor Who - Kamelion Collection [DVD] ), Doctor Who - The Curse of Fenric [DVD] , Doctor Who - Battlefield [DVD] and 'Enlightenment' (Doctor Who - The Black Guardian Trilogy [DVD] ) before it, 'Silver Nemesis' does not include a feature-length version with the 20-odd minutes of deleted scenes presented here as extras. A greatly missed opportunity that may well be rectified in future, but sells the collector short.
