Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Apple Remote for iPhone or iPod (Accessory)
The remote itself is a nice, sleek bit of kit whose architecture is inspired by Gen 2+ iPod nanos (vs the first generation remote, whose architecture owed much more to first generation shuffle design). The brushed metal remote is longer, more scratch resistant, and has more buttons than the 1st gen remotes, but doesn't add anything in terms of device support.

The remote is not the iPod/iPhone exclusive device advertised. Instead, it's a catchall that doesn't do a great job where ANY Apple product is concerned. It works directly with iMac/Macbook/Mac Mini and INdirectly with iPod/iPhone/ - for the latter an Apple (compatible) docking station is required. Not sure where iPad fits on this scale.

If you own multiple devices from the preceding eligible groups, the remote works to some degree with all of them. There aren't many buttons, so functionality is REALLY limited and if multiple Apple devices are in the same room, with none tethered to the remote, the remote will work for all of the devices. Simultaneously. Cacophony.

If you don't want all of your Apple gadgets playing back at once, you need to tether the remote to a single Apple device. Which is counter-intuitive. A device selector/slider would enable users to employ a single remote on multiple Apple products. As things stand, if you want to use an Apple remote with your Apple device (and own more than one eligible product), you need to either buy a dedicated remote or dedicate one after purchase... and buy multiple remotes. It's silly, expensive and wasteful.

Apple, you can do better!

Could anyone let me know if this remote will work with a Philips DS3100/05 docking station, using an ipod ( this does not have its own remote). I note from another reviewer that he bought this remote for a B & W Zepplin ( which is a far higher spec. than my Philips) but the remote wasn't compatible perhaps this is because the Zepplin comes with its own remote.

Seren Ade says:
I can't imagine it will - it's aimed at Apple devices with remote sensors inbuilt. iPods don't have these and if your Phillips dock didn't come with a remote it may not have a sensor at all, never mind one that's Apple compatible.

Thank you so much for your reply. This makes it simple enough for me to understand!!! regards

It might be worth checking the Philips website or your manual to make sure about whether or not your dock has a remote sensor inbuilt (though it's stingy of Philips not to supply a remote if it does!).
