4.0 out of 5 stars Strange interpretation of the Murder on the Orient Express, 5 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Agatha Christie's Poirot - Collection 8 [DVD] (DVD)
Having read the Murder on the Orient Express prior to viewing, I was somewhat surprised of the darkness and the new side to Poirot in this episode. Suddenly the protagonist has become a truly believing catholic, and the episode is focused on moral and "a higher justice". His indifference towards a mob execution in the streets of Istanbul is unexpected. At one point, he even refers to it as justice. The book, as I remember, was entirely centred on the mystery. David Suchet is nevertheless as brilliant as always, but the religious aspect of the episode and the melancholy might not suite everyone.

However, the production quality is very high in all four episodes, and certainly worth getting.

hi, yes i agree totally with you. it was disappointing that this should be one of the last episodes as it leaves me feeling dismayed. i think the fun & lighthearted side went out of episodes when hastings was no longer there to add the lighter side to crime. while poirot showed compassion in some episodes for people commiting a crime against people who deserved it in this one as you say he seems distant, judgemental & harsh. i found the event in the street quite offputting & disturbing esp because of his indifference. it is a shame to think of the charming man we have loved all through the years has become hardened by crime.
as i say some writers seem intent on leaving on a bad note. i find this odd also in the comedy series 'one foot in the grave'. why do people have to be killed.ok its real life but we dont watch these shows for that.reality tv shows are for those people.i would have liked to see them continue on as they always have been.it took me a long time to watch part of that episode.i didnt know he died until i saw a comment from a blabber mouth on here who gave it away to people contemplating buying the series!
well.. i wonder if you also thought this of the halloween episode. anything involving children & death has to be considered dark & unnecessary. bye
