This review is from: Livescribe Echo 3-D Recording Earbuds (Electronics)Just perfect, nothing else to say about these. They work perfectly fine with the pen. I use them to record my lectures and I sit in the 4th or 5th row and they still work perfectly fine.

If you plug your earbuds in your ears, can you still hear the lecturer? I mean, does the earphone automatically and simultaneously transmit the signals it receives?

I've been using them for two years, on a weekly basis; to me, it seems the 'earbud' doesn't actually block the sound entering the ear, but merely 'samples' some of it as it goes through the ear-canal. So no, when you are recording they do not 'transmit'; only on playback do the microphone assemblies act as miniature loudspeakers. I've used them regularly to backup phone conversations with banks and DWP/JC+ (after all, they announce that the conversation may be recorded for training or legal purposes) so I can recap what I have promised to do, struggling with normal hearing (with pen in top pocket). With the proliferation of hearing aids and music-players, having a device in one's ear appears normal, now. I haven't yet needed to 'just playback'; but if one uses them to record when sketching diagrams, graphs and 'mind-maps', they provide a vibrant audiovisual record. I incorporate their use in teaching science and ESOL, as one of many varied tools, used whenever they may enrich an experience. In about 2000 recordings, I have not experienced unreliability; the battery is internally sealed/ non-replacable. Highly recommended quality product with quick and competent manufacturer e-mail support; mini-plug matches this pen, i.e. non-standard due to what it needs to do, earmikes used to be a special US-import; worth protecting in a pocket carry-sleeve or case, and remembering that cord is long (do not snag them as you get up) and earbuds are cleverly not overly tight-fitting, pen battery life is 3 - 4 h (Amazon now supplies a UK-mainscharger, or of course one can charge with the supplied stand, from a USB-socket.) Interesting teaching applications on US Website. A simple, reliably-made and stylish unit. Although it is included with each new pen, it is, as always, wise to ensure one has accessories while they are on the market. I paste a folded sheet of their 'micro-dotted' paper into my pocket diary each year, with the other colour inks clipped inside the cover, so that I am never without this asset.
