I just want to add to my review of Firebrand in the Times by saying that I can't imagine a child of 11+, or an adult with imagination who could resist this book. From the moment the hero and narrator, Seth, tells us how he's lying in wait to put an arrow through his brother Conal's heart to save him from being burnt as a warlock, you're gripped. Everything about the Sithe - whom you gradually realise are what folk-lore calls faerie people - is brilliantly realised, as is the contrast between their life behind the Veil and those of Scots in the 16th century. Seth is a brilliant creation. Brave, rude, sexy, angry and an outsider both in his mother's lift at the Court of the evil Queen and in his father's clann, he's what every teenage boy feels or longs to be. His rivalry with Conal, and the bond between them beautifully developed.
Although the story is unfolded with grat subtlety and skill, and stands on its own I can't wait for the sequel. It beats Twilight into a cocked hat.
