The idea of writing a book about the books that a son and his mother read together while she is dying of pancreatic cancer is an intriguing one. Although I thought that Schwalbe's writing was very sloppy in many places, his intensely personal and colloquial style makes the book very readable. I also thought that the book would have been better without the many digressions and excess of detail which considerably weaken its structure. But Schwalbe provides a moving account of his mother's experience of chemotherapy, the books they discussed together during this time merely forming a backdrop to their story. 'The End of Your Life Book Club' is really a eulogy to the author's mother and a celebration of her life and her love of books.
