Weeping for Jerusalem,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Holy War: The Crusades and Their Impact on Today's World (Paperback)
Reading 'Holy War: The Crusades and their Impact on Today's World' changed both my understanding and my attitude towards past and present tensions between the Christian, Islamic and Jewish worlds. I am not a historian nor a theologian, but I was carried swiftly along by the power and sweep of Karen Armstrong's urgent narrative. As an aging Catholic I imagined the Crusades to have been a necessary, if savage conflict to regain legitimate control of Jerusalem and the holy places of Christian beginnings. What was new and quite devastating was the brutality and absurdity that occasioned so much devastation and human suffering, both Christian and Muslim, all in the name of God. That such folly could have been justified by Christians and Muslims would be astonishing, if it were not for the fact that 'holy war' is still with us. The legacy of the Crusades should shame us, but has the power also to prevent us repeating the mistakes of the past. Through her breathtaking knowledge and wonderful writing Karen Armstrong issues a prophetic warning which the modern world ignores at its peril.

You give her book a good review but only give her one star?
