It was always going to happen, just a question of when. The blue case looked okay, the green twin pack ... meh! Then the steelbook. This steelbook. No frills. Solid black and a symbol. A 'Sign' iconic, classic, quality. This was my copy ... yes.
"WAIT" ... "GHOST'S BACKWARDS" ... they cry! "OMG YES!" The 'No Ghost' sign is mirrored. "But why? Why for the UK release?
Many say this is due to the fact that in the UK (and other countries) the 'No' sign slash is from top left to bottom right. This is correct and rumour has it that the 'No Ghost' sign was based around the UK 'No' sign used in No Smoking etc. However the big BUT here is that every single logo seen in the film, the ghost always faces left.
Before the theatrical release of Ghostbusters there was the usual hype that comes with any big blockbuster release. Like many other films, before and after, with Ghostbusters the hype was initiated by the legendary teaser poster "Mmmmmmm".
A simple solid black poster, no text, no title, just a symbol. This 'No Ghost' symbol. It ignited the imagination and burned, into the soul of every child and kid at heart. "What is this?" "What's it called?"
Remember this was pre-digital, pre-internet, pre-1985. It was the first time that the public had witnessed the now famous 'No Ghost' sign. That poster had the ghost facing right. All the signs in the film show the ghost facing left but that first ever poster, that original iconic image, was the same as on the cover of this Steelbook.
Sony (The releasing studio) could have gone all out to compete with the surge of Universal or Paramount centenary Steelbook releases. Given us a showy, an all bells and whistles, mess of a cover. Instead they gave us what we all wanted.
And, just like this faithful blu-ray transfer, which does show off the grain that the cheap film used so heavily throughout the 80's attracts. This release is original and quality.
Sometimes the studios get it right, sometimes the nod gets tipped towards the fans, sometimes we just need to notice.
