Not sure what it is?,
This review is from: Trespass (Paperback)
An awful, self indulgent novel with unlike-able and shallow characters that really defies any attempt to place it within a specific genre. The Observer suggests "full of suspense" errr...no, the 'event' that is suggested from the start and on the blurb, had still not happened 200 pages in so no suspense there! The Times "thrilling" again not! So if it's not a thriller or suspense novel - what is it? Well here's where it becomes difficult. It lacks the character depth or development to be a family drama, the character interaction is limited so not a psychological thriller. The three character/setting strands barely come together (the opening strand appears to have been largely forgotten and does not even need to be there) and the 'reveal' is something anyone can see coming.
I must admit that this book had been on my 'to read' list for some time when I found a copy in my local charity shop (thank God I didn't pay full price). I was lured by the reviews comments on the front but cannot see how they possibly link to this book. It's the same with the good reviews that are on Amazon - did they read the same book? I really wish I hadn't bothered. Have not read any Rose Tremain before and will not pick up another one.
Only gave 1 star because zero is not an option.
