A significant film about a significant film,
This review is from: Baadasssss! [DVD] (DVD)
Mario Van Peebles directs, produces and stars in a film about his father Melvin Van Peebles struggle to get his film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song made.
This pioneering independent film would go on to gross over $15 million at the box office when it was $1 per ticket an amazing achievement.
This is a black director in an all white industry with no money, a crew with little or no experience, no distribution, getting the film he wants to make get made and nothing is going to stop him.
This a highly enjoyable docudrama, about a group of misfits who you get behind, because you want to see them succeed against the odds. With an always interesting and varied cast of charaters led by the excellent Mario Van Peebles.
Watch this DVD and you will see how things were in the movies and in the world in 1971, the debt independent films owe to Melvin Van Peebles and you might just learn a thing or two and be entertained at the same time.
There are a number of extra's on this DVD, a commentary by Mario and Melvin, a Q&A with Melvin and a making of documentary titled the Birth of Black Cinema.
