This review is from: Drawing and Painting Wild Animals (Paperback)
This was a much awaited book, but sadly does not do justice to Vic 's work. I love Vic's sensitive pastel painting and hoped for a real treat with a book packed full of these images. Why oh why then have Search press reverted to the same tired formula, step by step of the extremely basic, finishing with pictures that are not what I would expect from such an accomplished artist. If you are a complete beginner or just starting out then this book might appeal, although the market is swamped with other similar books of better quality.

H. Nye says:
I would assume it's because rather than just being purely a 'how-to' pastel instruction book (if you want very detailed pastel demonstrations try his DVDs which are excellent), as the cover says, this is a more general introduction to painting AND drawing wild animals. Furthermore, it gives pointers to help with wildlife painting in watercolour, acrylic and oil too - and so given the length of the book, it would be impossible to cover any one of them in great detail.

Julie Artist says:
You are wrong in your assumption, my review is based on the quality of the drawings and the very simplistic and basic approach. This is a pure beginners book, and I was disappointed as I have seen a lot of Vic's splendid work and hope the book would do his work justice and inspire others. Sadly art book publishers appear to think that the step by step format is all that is required for would be artists, rather than a more in depth advanced approach that would suit other skill levels. See my other reviews for some examples of this. I am sure this book will have many fans simply because it bears Vic's name, but that aside, I based my review on the value the book would be to me as an artist. I have now returned my copy to Amazon.

Totally agree with Julie on this. This book is just for beginners and there are so many similar books out their in the art world, on all manner of subjects, mostly by vastly over rated artists that get themselves out their by what ever means they can, but on close inspection their work isn't that clever and they are not as good as they would like to believe. Good publicists don't always make good artists. Unfortunately many of the public follow these artists like sheep.
