Many already have made the connection with Brandon Sanderson finishing the Robert Jordan series. I read all the books by Robert Jordan but not those written by Brandon Sanderson (yet). So I hope I'll give you an honest review based on Sanderson only.
In one word: clever.
Refreshing approach to the use of special gifts called 'Allomancy' in his characters, it isn't an on going thing and they do have their weaknesses.
The characters have been put together brilliantly and are very believable. It wouldn't surprise me if the Author has studied real historic scenario's (oppresion, liberation, anarchy etc.) and incorporated them into his style of writing and inbued these psychologies / emotions into his characters. This becomes clearer when you read the second book in the series.
To some readers the Vin character may be 'silly' for falling in love with a 'noble' (which I saw someone moan about in their review) but if you have a little understanding of the human psyche, you will find it is a very possible and a believable scenario, especially for a character that has a good dose of empathy and intelligence, which Vin has ;). Sanderson is approaching this relationship in a very down to earth, it happens style of writing.
If you are looking for something different to read and are fed up with the long on going 'journey' scenario's that most Fantasy Authors use to make a story more exciting, you will find that Sanderson can write a lot with his characters remaining in one place and make the story very deep and exciting. They don't have to undertake ongoing 'Lord of the Rings' style epic journeys, also he hasn't got the need to leave you hanging like George R. Martin by writing 10 different books for each character in the same world and mix them up! Hooray!
