4.0 out of 5 stars BEFORE ARCHDRUDE, THERE WAS St JULIAN, 2 Mar. 2007
This review is from: Saint Julian (1987) (Audio CD)
Funny that this should appear on my Amazon recommendations page on this the twentieth anniversary of its release. Largely overlooked by much of his fan base, Saint Julian remains the one pure, smashmouth rock n roll album amongst The Cope's vast ranging back catalogue. Donald Ross-Skinner's riproaring guitars are a predominant feature throughout, from the opening bars of 'Trampolene' to the hard hitting thrash of 'Pulsar' and 'Screaming Secrets'. The directive unpredictability of 'Shot Down' (Record Mirror ludicrously compared it to Bachman Turner Overdrive) is as thought provoking as anything Cope has produced, whilst 'Planet Ride' contains one of the catchiest outros ever. 'Eve's Volcano' delivers a compulsive chorus hook that still has me singing along to this day and the closing track 'Crack In The Clouds' gives a nod to the album's fabulous predecessor, 'Fried'. The crowning glory, however, has to be the timeless 'World Shut Your Mouth', destined as it is to remain as the man's biggest solo commercial success and an essential musical tricket for all those that remember the mid-80's for something far more substantial than Kinda Magic and Brothers In Arms. Not an altogether essential Cope classic, but well worth owning a copy if only for the reason that he will probably never deliver its like again.
