it is a typical apple pie film with a sharp edge to it and the ending is bitter sweet....but I liked it. I don't think this film tries to be clever or subtle..it tells a tragic story and sadly the tragedy of one person helps another to break free of his own inner torment...not just for this reason but for others the story tells us to open our hearts to the suffering of others and to accept and just listen to what they are saying...should be simple enough especially for the psychiatrist but here's the rub, we are all shut down and overwhelmed by society's pressues and so on...none of us are immune...it has been said that those of us who experience severe loss in our lives do end up living on another planet...it is the way we try to cope..catatonia is a living earthly state....not extra terrestrial. nor alien...I liked the way the film ended with Spacey just registering the hint of a smile....in the total tragedy of his life, he had found a place in the heart of another human being which is simply what we all want isn't it?
