This review is from: Sennheiser CX 300-II Precision Noise-Isolating Ear-Canal Phones - Black (Eco Packaging) (Electronics)
This review is based on my use of these ear-buds with my 6th Generation iPod Classic. My musical tastes vary from metal to classical via brass bands, swing band, and just about everything else inbetween.
I have long been a fan of Sennheiser - swearing by their PX100's since they came out. PX100's however have a fundemental design flaw (connected with the way that they are stored), and a recent tweak in the design - in my honest opinion - made that flaw actually worse. So - felt it was time to try something else.
I had read many reviews of the CX300 II and decided - while they were at a good price - to give them a shot. Not being used to in-ear devices, I persuaded myself that the muddy thin sound that I found when I first tried them was due to me not spending enough time finding right fitting and good position etc. So I persevered.
And then I persevered some more.
I eventually got to a stage where I believe I had the optimum quality available from these headphones. Sadly that quality is a muddy, unlear, indistinct, quiet, muttering. It was truly like listening to music with my head in a bucket. The much-lauded bass quality only seems to contribute to the muddiness of it all - nothing is distinct and very little of what I would consider clarity. In addition, despite me spending all that time trying to fit properly and so on and playing with EQ, these ear-buds physically hurt every time I wore them - extremely off-putting, bearing in mind I used to listen to my device at least 2 or 3 times a day.
I persevered for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks, I needed to persevere no more since the leaft ear-bud clearly developed some sort of serious fault. Cleaned them (they need a lot of cleaning) carefully, but no joy - a fault is a fault is a fault.
So - since I think so little of this product, why do I give it 2 stars? Well - good question - to be honest I am tempted to leave it at 1 star, but at the very, very least (and even though they went wrong quickly), these are better than the dreadful pound-shop ones that Apple ship with the iPod!! That really is the only reason.
Incidentally - the very next ear-buds I tried - Sony's EX300SL's - took less than 2 minutes for me to find the right fitting and comfortable position, and make my iPod sound absolutely incredible, no matter WHAT kind of music I listen to (that is important for me!) - far above even the PX100's I swore by for so long.
Sorry Sennheiser - I will not be coming back.
