Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica - The Mini Series [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this series because I remember watching the original way back in the late '70's as a child. The makers stuck to the original concept of the story but they did change a lot of the details.
Human civilisation is destroyed by robotic invaders - in this version, humanity actually created the cylons as mechanical servants (which turned on them). So 40years after the human-cyclon war they return with a vengeance and basically wipe out humanity in one go because they had access to 'the defense mainframe'. Only the old Galactica (with outdated computersystems) is not prone to the electronic shutdown)commands by the cylons.
Of course the special effects are a lot better (it's been 25 years folks) and the cylons are definetaly a better design.
The old centurions got a nice new design (robo-cop meets chrome-toaster) but the toaster series has been expanded with a number of humanlooking models (and very nice ones for that matter). The cylon fighters are no longer the 3 centurions in a ship, but seem to be replaced with robot-ships. Which to me always seemed a more logical way of doing things, even when I was a kid. Why bother with a 'body', just plug the brain into the fighter ?! They kept the human dart-like fighters - albeit they look a bit more futuristic (always liked those).
One of the things that seems to 'annoy' die-hard fans of the old series is the fact that Starbuck is now a woman. Personally I do not see what all the fuss is about really. She's a better actress than 'what's his name' and why not have female fighter pilots - we do have them in the 21st century you know. It's a nice twist.
I've always found Battle star Galactica a bit flawed (as a story)and in my view this version addresses some of the basic problems with the story and it's a good (contemporary) remake and well worth having if you like SF.
Just do not go looking for more of the same of the original series. This is a stand-alone version...
