Tedious and racist,
This review is from: Gone With The Wind - Musical Tie-In (Paperback)
This was chosen as a title for a reading group.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't get beyond page 75 of this boring, nostalgic, narcissistic and unpleasant slab of words. Occasionally the narrative was leavened by a bit of action but then it slumped back into stereotypical character descriptions. To start with I thought the racism, unavoidable in the historical setting, would at least be handled in a critical or ironic fashion. But, nope, it's just good old fashioned, down home, stupid as mud, racism.
Racism, in a book, I can just about handle. Tediousness, however, is unforgivable.
As a historical and academic object one could say that this book is an interesting response to the economic and social changes in 1920s USA but I think it would be kinder to let "Gone with the wind" go quietly out of print, to be replaced by something better.
