This is the third book I have read by this author and it's by far the best in my opinion. The description is excellent and the major characters are well drawn, I also loved the music references being a Sandy Denny fan myself. There were a few sticking points for me in terms of the main protagonists, one - Lillian can't remember illustrating the children's book about Broadmaw Bay - this isn't adequately explained, two - the Christian church is illustrated as a vandalised shell with broken windows and three - when James mentions seeing a small girl in a purple and grey uniform near the standing stones, the locals tell him this is impossible as the school closed sixty years ago. What on earth would make the family want to move there? It's like a horror film where the victim hears noises and goes out onto the landing with a candle, I suppose to quote a Muppet movie "It's plot exposition, it has to go somewhere." Nevertheless I enjoyed this book, the pacing was good, in fact I found it hard to put down and it built to a competent climax. As for the ending, well "Crazy Man Michael he wanders and walks, and he talks to the night and the day-o. But his eyes they are sane and his speech it is clear and he longs to be far away-o."
