Good - but not for Arjen,
This review is from: The Human Equation (Standard Version) (Audio CD)This is a great album... but taken in the context of the last 2 Ayreon Projects (the 2 Migrator CDs' and the double CD Electric Castle) it is very disappointing. There are maybe 3 tracks which can stand alone and be enjoyable, but no single track stands out as being up to the standard Ayreon listeners are used to.
there are some great moments in most of the tracks - but sound like the kind of thing I would do if I was trying to copy Ayreon. Almost every great moment in the tracks sound like rip-offs of greater moments from his last 2 projects
The production is as usual exceptional, and the musicianship phenomenal.... but never fully utilised.
There are some great ideas - but executed in too contrived a fashion. I have the horrible feeling while listening to this that he stopped trusting his own ideas and decided to nick Dream Theaters' stuff.
To those who are unfamiliar with Ayreon I would suggest buying this album immediately. If you love it, you will cream over his other stuff. If you don't, then take it back to the record store and exchange it for one of his last 2 projects, you won't be disappointed.
