Rather dated and not to me all that fascinating. Of its type it is I suppose good and probably worth a read

Mikey C says:
M.R. James' reputation as an absolute master of his genre is 110% secure and can't be dented by silly comments. I trust you have posted to warn that Shakespeare and Dickens are also "rather dated". Stick to reviewing weed-killer, please.

William Shardlow says:
Wd is perfectly entitled to his opinion, and he did say, "not to *me* all that fascinating." He said nothing about James' mastery, or otherwise. Personally I agree with Wd, I found the first few stories in the book rather tedious, and doubt I will continue. Also Wd said nothing about Dickens or Shakespeare! How can you make any comment on his views of these authors? It's a fact that some authors do date in such a way as to make them unenjoyable for many modern readers; for me, and Wd, James appears to fit into this category.
