Turgid and unsubtle,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have to go against the general grain here and say that I found this book thoroughly unengaging. I confess this isn't my normal reading material, but I selected it through the Vine program with the intention of broadening my horizons with a new author and a new genre.
The problem isn't particularly with the story - the problem is with the writing. The prose is overblown and overwrought. The characters are dislikeable and one dimensional. The writing perspective changes abruptly between 1st, 2nd and 3rd person, making the thing rather like a conceptual roller-coaster. I don't know if that's a stylistic choice, but I found it grating and disorienting. Additionally, the whole thing is dreadfully unsubtle - there's no thought that goes unexpressed, no nuance that isn't dissected and laid bare.
Not my cup of tea at all.
