Enjoyable Chenier, but with a disappointment,
This review is from: Andrea Chénier [DVD] (DVD)
I have a high regard for this opera which I first heard 50 years ago. I purchased the Decca recording by Tebaldi, Del Monaco, and Bastianini, which I still have. Recently I decided to purchase a DVD of this opera and chose the La Scala performance with Carreras and Capuccilli. The main reason for this choice being Capuccilli, the best Carlo Gerard after Bastianini. I was not disappointed, it was a great performance. The rest of the cast perform very well also, although occasionally Carreras shows a little strain here and there, but sings with emotion. Now to my grievance. The most important role in this opera after the three leads is L'Incredibile (The Spy). This character is not even in the cast list in the booklet, or on the DVD. I like to have a complete cast so that I know who is singing. I am not just disappointed with this but quite angry. Somewhere, someone knows who sang that part and it would have been quite easy for it to have been corrected. The only other time I have known this to happen was the part of Normanno in Lucia Di Lammermoor on the La Scala Callas and Di Stefano recording. To finish more positively, this is a very good performance.
Since writing the above, I have found on the internet, a cast list for this performance which states that Bruno Lazzaretti sang the part of L'Incredibile.
