Lock, Stock and two all-action detectives,
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes [DVD] (DVD)
Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is an all-action anti-hero with occasional nods to the origins of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle's legendary creation. Robert Downey Jr's clipped English tones are at odds with his brawling, opium smoking lifestyle but at least present something different from the deerstalker wearing aloof older gentlemen that we have seen played by the likes of Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone.
With explosions, shootings, knife fights, the aforementioned brawling and grisly deaths aplenty, this is most definitely a Ritchie film. Jude Law is okay as Holme's sidekick Doctor Watson but there is little of interest in his burgeoning relationship and he is really there to look good beside Downey's grizzled Holmes.
Overall this is an entertaining if shallow Hollywood movie, that in my opinion pales when set against the outstanding TV series starring Benedict Cumerbatch - hopefully there will be more of the latter to come, although the ending of this movie suggests that Ritchie's big-screen version could well be back for more as well...
