5.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent Pop, 31 May 2010
This review is from: Rob Da Bank Presents Sunday Best (Audio CD)
Rob Da Bank and Chris Coco's now extinct Blue Room show specialised in digging up new and old tunes that spanned genres but had one thing in common - a lilting, inverted, somewhat off kilter pop genius. This album is essentially two cds of that sort of thing, and will delight anyone who ever loved the Blue Room, or likes Da Bank's Radio 1 Show.
It's hard to pick out highlights, as there genuinely isn't a bad track on here. The first disc, entitled Dusty Disco, starts off really strongly, with the first five tracks, particularly William Pitt's City Lights, standing out. It's a trip through esoteric disco floor fillers, wrapped up at the end with a few slower numbers.
The second, Balaeric Beauties, spreads the quality pretty evenly throughout. It starts off a little lo-fi, and then blends into the Balearic sound of the title. Piney Gir and Simple Kid's "Nightsong", a twisted and kooky love song, sticks its head slightly above the parapet, as does the lilting harmonica of the final track.
This album is a trip through Rob Da Bank's world, and it's one that fans of his radio show will be more than happy to repeat on a regular basis.
