In a word this film is fantastic! Many compare it to The Matrix which I think is a bit unfair, o.k. so the main character dresses a bit like Neo and there are other similarities but this movie has a style all of its own. There's no rip-off bullet time photography (which seems to pop up in every other movie nowadays!) and the design of the gun-katas is a fantastic piece of fight choreography genius!. The story takes place after world war 3, the "people in control" have decided that human emotion is what leads us to war, killing, violence, etc. People are now banned from having any kind of feelings and emotional material such as art, literature, film, music etc, are also outlawed. A drug known as prozium has been introduced and people must dose themselves with it daily to supress emotions and feelings. The enforcers of this system are known as Grammaton Clerics, the Grammaton Clerics hunt down an kill immediately any "sense offenders" who rebel against the system and still have feelings, look at art and literature, listen to music, and don't take prozium etc.
The most feared and professional of the Clerics John preston, (Christian Bale) one day accidentally destroys the glass tube containing his prozium dose and after starting to feel again makes no attempt to return to the state of no-feeling. What follows is a fantastic story as John tries to naturally supress his emotions in front of other Clerics so he doesn't get found out and labelled a "sense offender".
The first 30 mins of the film plod slightly with slight bursts of action, but once the scene is set and we know whats going on the action never lets up. The fighting and action scenes are amazing and superbly choreographed. The story is excellent and there are twists and turns to the plot which you really don't expect at all!
This movie was criminally overlooked at the cinema, (everyone thought it was just another Matrix rip-off) but is actually better than Matrix Reloaded (i'm not comparing it, just saying it's better :-). If you like sci-fi, if you like action, if you like a good story with an interesting plot that is well acted then Equilibrium is for you!
