May have jumped the shark this time around......,
This review is from: Arrested Development - Season 4 [DVD] (DVD)
Ok, well they already did jump the shark in a previous series! This series isn't a complete disaster compared to the previous adventures of the Bluth family. However the script writers do the best they can to make characters boring and strangely unlikeable. This forth outing is bookended by the breakdown in the relationship between Michael and his son, George Michael. George finally breaks free from the influence of his father (and the rest of the dysfunctional family) and begins to live his own life. Just a pity its quite boring.
The father-son dynamic doesn't seem to click this time around, both seem out of character in many ways. Borderline unlikeable for both of them. Isla Fisher is the love interest who (unwittingly) begins to drive a wedge between the father and son. Just a pity her performance is wooden and lacks a touch of humour. So the beginning and the end of this series are bogged down between the three characters and it can be a bit of a slog. Even when the show moves the focus on Lindsey and George senior, the laughs are still limited to what you would expect.
Thankfully Gob and Tobias save the day and the series. Despite the drab opening few episodes, the wait is worth the while as the story shifts to the most dysfunctional of the family members. Tobias, tobias, tobias......how did it all go so wrong? In each and every way you would expect it too. From his appearance at the "acting" classes to his harrassment from Marvel and his arrest......he saves this 4th installment from being a complete disaster. Gob, becomes part of an entourage and has a new romantic link to a previous character who you honestly wouldn't expect! Very funny in places but unfortunately not in many others. Perhaps taking itself a little too seriously at times especially when dealing with Michael and his son who become borderline irritating.
