My daughters are aged 4 and nearly 6 and both really love this book. It is bright and colourful and they will happily sit and look at the pictures alone or will ask me to read to them about particular pages that they think look interesting.
Part of the appeal for my children is their love of the programme Octonauts, which has introduced them to a wide variety of undersea creatures and there is a similar feel to the cartoon pictures shown in this book. Indeed it's a great next step for those who have shown an interest in the programme, with a bit more grown up content.
The book is captivating, with lots of mini facts and a good dose of humour in its conversational style. Essentially the creators have taken a science book and made it fun and familiar, without compromising on the quality of the information.
For independent reading this is probably best for children aged 7-9, as the language is more advanced than my girls could manage for a least a year or so - but for a family time book it is nice to read about a creature together and have fun sounding out words like "zooplankton" and "Humboldt Squid". As a bonus, my children don't get bored as each creature or underwater topic is just one page long and each and every one has a quirky looking cartoon character to illustrate just what is being described.
I've enjoyed reading this just as much as my girls. I would recommend this for any child's library. As an added treat, there is a nice little pull out poster at the back as well, which you can put up on their wall.
