This review is from: Roberts Radio Play DAB/DAB+/FM RDS Digital Radio with Built In Battery Charger - Grey (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've got a few DABs knocking about the house, from Pure, Roberts and Sony. I listen to nowt but Radio 6 (occasional bit of Radio 4) so these are essential to me!
The Roberts Play is clearly aimed at the camping, holidaying crowd, those who like to take a radio with them to the park with the newspaper. It's almost small enough to be pocket sized and will easily slip in to most handbags. The rubber edging (which you can remove and replace with optional additional edges of different colours) is intended to give some grip while also protecting the radio from the inevitable drop to the floor.
The inclusion of a built-in battery recharger means you can use standard AA-sized rechargeables - much much cheaper than the bespoke battery that the Pure radios need (which usually cost £20-30 on their own!). I recommend splashing a little extra cash and picking up a set ot Li-Ion rechargeables - they will last much longer and don't suffer from the 'memory' effect, meaning that you can plug it in to the mains and unplug it at will. If you use normal rechargeables you will have to make sure you fully exhaust the batteries before recharging them, or you will quickly find they will start losing their charge in a very short time.
The radio fortunately uses relatively little power, meaning it can go for hours on a single charge.
The radio is easy to set up - it does so automatically - and fairly simple to use in practice, with all the usual features.
Where it is let down is the sound - it's simply too small to produce a satisfying tone, everything is packed in at the top end. This makes the unti fine for 'talk radio', and some music, but it suffers on anythig bass-heavy. If you like to listen to Radio 1xtra don't buy this!!
This relatively poor sound, in a unit that is in the same price bracket as some really excellent radios, that has led me to allocate it just 3 stars.
