4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, improved with patches, 31 Oct 2013
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Football Manager 2014 (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
Having been an avid football manager fan for the past decade or so i always look forward to new editions and this is one of the more revolutionary editions, ill keep the review short (played 8 months in game time with Newcastle, currently 7th)

pros:
new tactic system takes some getting used too but provides (im guessing) more realistic experience, in terms of applying a team strategy by instructing individual players
interface is cleaner and quicker
individual tactics, morale and form has greater bearing on results than attributes of players
new transfer negotiations save a tonne of time

cons:
lots of bugs with the match engine, a few are listed below
keeper gets beaten at near post way too often
defenders standing on posts for corners do not move off the line to mark, tackle or close down attacking players
defenders ghost around being stupid
getting players to cross regularly (not easy) leads to a lot more goals than normal

**edit, after updates bugs are less numerous and game seems defensively better.

overall:
good game, but the bugs just make it look strange and not quite natural. if you go by the results alone, its a good simulator as expected, but seeing a goalie beaten at the near post, or defenders standing around doing nothing kind of takes the thrill out of scoring a last minute winner.

sort out the bugs and this would be the best fm in a long time, as is i wanted to give it 3.5/5, but 3 stars seems more apt than 4.

**edit, after updates im revising my rating to a 4 star which i think is a fair reflection of a good game, some issues still persist but a solid effort by SI.

Is the goalie being beaten at the near post a bug or did you have Hart in goal :) There are always a few bugs at release, SI normally clear them up promptly though, the biggest bug I saw on FM13 was Aaron Lennon finishing my first season with 15+ goals and 20+ assists! Glad to see a good number of pros though!

Hannibal says:
have to say after playing for a while the goalie being beaten at near post is a lot less common than before, and games in general are lower socring than before. also with a well thought out defence protecting 1 goal leads is possible too. this may be due to an update, im not sure. hence ill give it four stars now.
