Powerful Family Drama,
This review is from: The Descendants (DVD + Digital Copy) (DVD)
I must admit that I have mixed feelings about "The Descendants" after watching it in the cinema today. It was a quiet, reflective film with no action scenes, special effects, violence or rage which was a good thing , but I also thought that this lack of excitement made the film slightly dull and it was somewhat overlong- I checked my watch a few times at various stages of the movie in my eagerness for the film to end. George Clooney plays a wealthy landowner cum lawyer whose wife is lying in a coma in hospital. In her absence from the family , Clooney has to step up and look after his two young daughters who are foul mouthed and somewhat truculent. While trying to bond with them in the midst of this family crisis, he finds out that his dying wife had been having an affair with a real estate agent. Reeling from these devastating blows and looking somewhat bewildered , Clooney has to decide whether or not to sell his land holdings in Hawaii. The film charts the course of Clooney's life through this turbulent period. Can he come out the other end still sane ? The film is set in a cloudy, autumnal Hawaii and the film is a powerful drama about family life. To be honest I thought that Clooney would have been happier being a bachelor and not have to cope with all those nerve shredding crises. His character didnt seem comfortable in his parental role and his wife's affair indicates that perhaps he wasn't the most attentive of husbands either. However he came across as a decent, kindly individual who just wants to do the right thing, an increasing rarity in the movies these days.
