FIVE STARS FOR THE MUSICAL CONTENT! BUT... the overall package is perhaps over-priced at 40 quid. I did actually get this from amazon.co.uk 7 days ago for 29.99 - they do this with alot of items - fluctuate the price, one week up one week down - you need to keep a keen eye on their listings as prices do change from week to week.
The product itself - well in spite of the fanfare leading up to this release I have to say that only about 12 of the tracks have never been released before (we do get this info in small print on the rear of the album, but I thought I would point it out again), others have been available on different compilations released over the years, albeit slightly different mixes and as for the promise of rare images/pictures I had actually seen most of them elsewhere - and finally the accompanying essays in the booklet are basically rehashes of the oft-printed David Ritz piece about the album and one by Ben Edmonds which is more or less straight out of his book.
I still think value-wise you are better off getting the 2 disc 'deluxe edition' released several years ago as you also get a live album to boot and the essays in the booklet and additional photos are very similar.
However as a big Marvin fan it's still great to hear the instrumental tracks recorded post WGO - a bit more funk/rock in many cases - and the quality of the LP gatefold sleeve is nice.
Ultimately this is one for the Marvin completist's and here's looking to 2021 for the 50th anniversary edition ;-) I'm guessing Motown have got a bit more left over in the barrel...
