How nice it ws to open a flat pack and see and smell real wood, real joints, and simple instructions for assembly. We did not want a chip-board or MDF type material (with a plastic veneer); we wanted something that looked like real furniture and as I look at the finished product, that's what we have.
It was well packed, everything was there and clearly labelled, and the instructions are very straightforward and easy-to-follow illustrations. You need a cross-slot screwdriver, a mallet (a hammer with a wooden block so as not to damage the wood or finish will do), and a hammer for the nails. I only had one minor problem, one hole in a drawer knob wasn't quite deep enough.
Yes there are dowelled joints, strengthened and secured by screws, but no metal clasps and joints inserted into pre-drilled holes; no plastic screw-covers and NO METAL DRAWER RUNNERS! The only metal parts are screws and nails, traditional fastenings that are essential to fasten the back panels on to the carcass and drawers, and to attach the feet and handles.
The outer finish is lovely and matches several other, much more expensive pine items we have already. The drawer bottoms are triple ply plywood, not the flexi-hardboard that is so common and totally useless. The runners are thick, wooden battons already fixed to the sides.
Apparently, this can be put together in 45 minutes. I don't doubt it but I took longer because I used wood glue on the major joints.
It is certainly value for money and much easier to assemble than other flat-pack furniture I've made. It looks better and will ;last longer too.
It was also delivered 2 days before we were told to expect it! Thanks to all concerned.
