This review is from: The Sentimental Agent - Complete Series (DVD)
having looked at most of the known itc series such as the saint, danger man etc i moved on to man of the world and then found this, until now little watched show.
carlos thompson is excellent in the lead role with great support from burt kwouk and clemence bettany. Many other well known guest actors appear throughout the series. i loved the sets and the wardrobe from what now seems another age.
thompson was not used in a couple of episodes as the producers thought there would be problems with the audience understanding his accent (!)
the theme tune (carlos theme) fits perfectly with the main characters persona.
all in all very entertaining and well worth the money.

You seem to know what really happened. I read somewhere that Thompson's command of English was "limited" and that created shooting problems. However, when I bought this collection, I found his English quite fluid. (I don't find his accent especially thick either, but then again, I am also Argentine, so what do I know?)
No matter what, as you know, in the last 3 episodes Thompson's character was replaced, or --even more pathetic-- in the very last episode he is reduced to a few lines and the ingrate role of a bumbling idle useless womanizer. I felt bad about it. I prefer to consider this series as consisting on only (the first) ten episodes, as I don't really find reasonable any explanation given for his sacking.
As you probably are aware, Thompson later went to have a good cinema career in Germany (where he married Lilly Palmer until her death) so at some point he evidently spoke good German (he was of German-Swiss descent).

Claudio, what a perfect post. I concur completly. Actually the tiny scene with Carlos in the final episode is actually a scene filmed earlier on and snipped in to look like a new scene. Apparantly the final 3 episodes were filmed without Thompson due to difficulties between him and the producers, that is all I know. I agree he was wonderful and just like yourself , for me the series terminates after 10 episodes.

Thank you for your kind reply. If there were personality "difficulties between him and the producers" honestly that I can understand. He was a strongly opinionated man, often holding extreme views. He visited Argentina immediately after the military Junta stepped down, and he sounded very angry; he used very harsh words to threaten the military should they try to come back to power. He even made a stint to run for president of the country, of course quite unsuccesfully. However, to be fair, this weird side of him might have been in part a consequence of Lily Palmer's demise, an event he felt deeply. Perhaps before that he was milder (in fact, as a youngster he seemed to be quite timid.) Thanks again.
