Good but safe,
This review is from: Analogue (Audio CD)
I am a A-ha fan since the beginning and so feel that I have a good perspective on their career.
Personally , my fave albums are probably 'Memorial Beach' and 'East of the Sun' and ,of the later stuff, 'Major Earth'.
I have always loved Morten's voice. On record and live it is amazing. And the guys have written some great songs over the years.
I tried an experiment with this album....
I listened to it without knowing who had written which tracks.
At the end , I looked to see who had written what I considered to be the stand-out songs. The winner was by far Paul. His tracks had real sparks of originality and were interesting melodically. (And I didn't really see the Beatles connection that another reviewer mentioned).I'm sorry to say I found Magne's efforts good but a little safe. And overall , Morten's voice didn't seem to be stretched to its limits - which is when he is at his best , in my opinion.
In a nutshell - good but safe. Maybe some more experimentation is called for next time. A-ha are well established and could probably afford to go out on a limb and put out a really 'off-the-wall' album. Lets hope so.
