This review is from: Goddess of Vengeance (Hardcover)
Oh dear - could I be more disappointed? - I brought this as my 'holiday read' but I think perhaps I made an error as I'd only recently re-read Collins' career highlight 'Hollywood Wives'. In comparision, 'Goddess of Vengence' pales in to generic trash reading.

I like Collins writing style, and have hugely enjoyed previous novels (Hollywood Husbands, Rock Star, Lucky's Vendetta) but struggled with GoV from the first page - too many characters, with complex pasts (which Collins' insists on referencing bits of); there are too many locations, pop culture references (Lady Gaga & Amy Winehouse should recieve some sort of royality for the number of times they were referenced) and, most importantly, the central story - the battle for The Keys Hotel, and a rather menacing villian - is sidelined, instead we're subjected to a teenage 'love triangle'; an abortion 'will she/ won't she' and a 'who's the father' mystery (which wasn't much of a mystery at that).

The story timeline is confusion, the referencing back to past histories exhausting and ultimately, there wasn't enough of a story to keep me interested. I managed to get to the midpoint before giving up and skipping to the end where - no surprises - all's well that ends well.

Where were the amazing plot twists that made 'Hollywood Wives' such a slamming story? Where are the terrific characters created and developed in 'Chances' and 'Lucky'? Where is Collins' magic touch of being able to interweave different storythreads? All gone, I'm sorry to say.

I still think that Collins is a brillant writer, but do wonder if her storytelling peak is behind her. I would strongely hope that she now leaves the aged (and slightly tedious) Santantelo clan behind for her next outing - perhaps a return to her Hollywood roots would help? Either way, I think I'll be sticking to early books in future and suggest, if you're new to Collins', that you please done start with this tripe!
