Worthy of the "Hype",
This review is from: Hyperion (GOLLANCZ S.F.) (Paperback)
It's hailed as a classic and it is definitely one of the better sci-fi novels out there. I'd argue it is actually a very clever short-story anthology that combines to give a larger story. While each tale is very entertaining and unique in style (something Simmons does with apparent ease), I felt the overall story was still left very much a mystery. I suspect this will be addressed in the sequels though.
Out of the stories, I think the one about the Scholar and the Consul were the strongest as they had the most tragic tales and they really played around with the concept of time and interstellar travel. The Poet was the most entertaining of the missionaries though and his seven word vocabulary is hilarious.
