I ended up being a little disappointed in this novel probably because of all the reviews that raved about it. I thought the subject created great opportunity for a laugh out loud novel, but am sorry to say that it did not elicit that in meI enjoyed the "here and now" part of the tale about Allen but found the "past" detail of his life rather far-fetched and hence somewhat boring probably because it was so fantastical.
Strangely enough, the last chapter of the book was probably the most authentic for me as it gave an insight to so many of our "retirement homes" today which are filled with "rules and regulations" and the living hell it must surely be for many of the residents who have undoubtedly led inspired, independent, interesting lives, to which no one in authority in those homes gives the slightest recognition to.
They pride themselves on the level of physical care given but utterly neglect to discover who their residents have been in their long and fruitful lives.
I would recommend the book though for a holiday read.
