This review is from: Offenbach:Gaite Parisienne (Audio CD)
Lorin Maazel's spirited recording of Jacques Offenbach's "Gaîté Parisienne" may not be the best of them all but is most certainly among them, conjuring forth from the piece a heart-stirring vigor and elegance comparable with what only the best Champagne has to offer. The rest of these selections (Camille Saint-Saëns' "Danse Macabre"; Paul Dukas' "L'apprenti sorcier") are no less splendidly executed but, for me at least, "Gaîté Parisienne" is the pièce de résistance. We've been waiting too long for this stand-out vinyl album to surface on CD, and all that's left now is to enjoy it with an appropriate 'oh là là!' twinkle in the eye.
