5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding why you need Apple TV 2, 19 Jan. 2012
Having read through most of the reviews it is clear that all the negatives are from those that have not grasped the Apple TV is all it's glory (probably because almost none of the information is available in the box or from Apple's web site).
Apple TV 2 needs to be seen, esentially, as your final Apple add-on. You must already be an iTunes fanatic, preferably with films purchased or ripped into your hard drive (run an 'N' capable Mac or PC); you then have all your films, catagorised, right there on your main TV to flick through and view just by using the Remote App on your iDevice or the package gorgeous solid alloy remote that comes in the box.
Next is the stability of you network; this matters as Apple TV is designed to be run on an 'N' network; specifically with an Apple Airport Extreme router. The reason to run an Airport Extreme as your wifi router is becuase, unlike nearly every 'freebie from your ISP (AOL/Sky etc) wifi router' it is 'Dual band' (meaning it broadcasts the wifi on both 2.4 and 5Mhz; preventing it being interfered with by microwave ovens, portable landlines, baby monitors etc). Accept that this is how it was designed to be run and you will get all the benifits; you will not suffer lag or drop-outs mentioned (also consider the broardband speed you are getting; you must have at lest 2meg minimum).
It is simply not true that you cannot watch UK on demand TV. But I agree it is not obvious. Apple assume you already have an iPhone or iTouch long before an Apple TV. To watch, for example 4OD, you simply mirror it to Apple TV from you iPad2 (zoom to fill the screen) or iPhone 4S (if you have an iPad 1, iPhone 4 or iTouch there is a simple work around: choose Apple TV on your telly, on your iPhone/Pad/Touch go to Music, play a song and select Apple TV as the speaker, press pause, open 4OD App, select your program and hit play - iPhone goes blank and there is your program full size with sound on you TV screen).
You can play your music either from iTunes or direct from your iDevice through your home cinema speakers via Apple TV 2; walk in the door pull out your earphones, select Apple TV as the speaker and carry on listening to your tunes.
Flight simulation and driving games come into their own if you have an iPad 2. The pad becomes the controller and the game, via your STABLE wifi connection runs perfectly on you big flat screen TV - all via one download App that probably costs you £1.69!
Finally; we all spent years filing our cupboards with photo albums then not looking at them. We moved on to filling our computers with digital photos and not looking at them. Load all you photos into iTunes with one click, now when ever you want to, without even getting up, you can look through any of your photos on you TV.

So thats all your films, all your music, all your photos and and TV on Demand all on you main TV for +/- £99!!!!
You can of course stream anything from YouTube or any other video website to you Apple TV too. When you have an iPad too, you put the internet on the big screen and choosing a holiday becomes and instantly inclusive activity.

if someone has a box that gives them 4od etc then why change to apple tv?
if someone isn't bothered about viewing photos on their tv then why apple tv?
if someone is quite happy to view youtube on their laptop, or connect laptop via hdmi to tv then why apple tv?
if someone prefers to separate music, tv and other media types because not everyone in the house will want the same thing at the same time then why apple tv?
if someone doesn't feel the need to have things 'sent' wirelessly here, there and everywhere then why apple tv?
if someone doesn't listen to radio that often then why apple tv?

i guess for some it brings nothing new or useful to the table, and brings an over reliance on apple (which could be viewed as a negative).
