This review is from: The Lovers - The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)
A real comedy gem this,a time capsule of the 1970/71 period when the permissive society was everywhere except the street where you lived! It's superbly written by Jack Rosenthal & Geoff Lancashire and beautifully acted by the excellent Richard Beckinsale (Geoffrey) and the lovely Paula Wilcox (Beryl).Incidentally, when this was filmed, both actors were married and in Beckinsales case, with a daughter which makes their portrayal of the frustration of youthful unconsummated passion all the more impressive.a mention must be made of Joan Scott who is terrific as beryl's mother, occasionaly giving the impression that she'd be rather glad if her virtuous daughter wasn't quite so virtuous!
The film quality on the dvd is excellent,so much so that it sometimes looks like it was filmed yesterday rather than nearly 40 years ago.The kind of comedic acting on show hear no longer seems to exist sadly. If you were around at the time (as i was) it's a nice little nostagia trip and if you weren't,it's a lovely example of fine writing & superb acting coming together to make excellent tv.And i'm pleased to say that Paula Wilcox is still lovely and has a career thats still going strong.
