I enjoy a certain love affair with London and as a result have spent many hours walking around the various historic areas and indeed streets, therefore it was great to be granted the opportunity to review this book. The author, Declan McHugh, runs his own 'Shocking London' walk and is therefore well qualified to be able to write about the history of this great city. The book itself is pocket sized (well I suppose that depends on the size of your pocket!) but it's meant as a guidebook more than anything, however McHugh manages to make it so much more and I love the pithy way he writes about serial killers, such as Anthony Hardy or Dennis Nilsen and tries to understand their tortured minds and determine possible reasons why they carried out the atrocious acts they did.
The chapters centre around the different regions of London: West Central, West, North, East, East Central, South West, South East and is interspersed with other sections on other issues such as execution sites or more information on serial killers. Therefore it would be perfect to stick this book in your bag (or large pocket!) and head to a particular region of London to explore it further. There are also some cute line drawing maps to assist in accompanying any jaunt you may make.
In conclusion: a brilliantly researched little book which will no doubt take pride of place on people's bookshelves. I look forward to being able to explore entire London area during the next few years with this book at my side.
