4.0 out of 5 stars great but why censored, 30 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: First Men in the Moon [DVD] [1964] (DVD)
A classic sci fi film and a firm favourite of mine. the DVD looks great in Widescreen but beware the R2 version has been cut.The scene of the selenites stripping the moon calf( a giant caterpillar) of flesh has been completely removed! Dont understand this as whenever " first men in the moon" is shown on the telly its left in.I complained to columbia tristar but they never replied. Guess they are probably running round looking for the missing scene..one hopes.

F. Quinn says:
Would the film have achieved its 'Universal' rating if it had left the scene referred to in?

I have just viewed the Region 1 (USA version) and it is Digitally Remastered Picture & Sound, that scene is left intact ! The Quality is excellent ! I was blessed being able to pick up a copy secondhand for $10.00

Mr Foster- your a star! I knew that I had not imagined this scene and I don't know why it was cut from the region 2 version. I recently viewed the film on film 4 in the UK and the cut was on that print as well. Comments from other posts on other websites seemed to point to false memory syndrome!
I will be ordering my region 1 version right away.

Hi Michael, I just want to clarify this scene, it follows on from Cavor (Lionel Jeffries) in the Translation Room with Kate (Martha Hyer) and he repeats "Yes it's Imperial" to the Selenite trying to communicate with them. Next scene we see is Arnold (Edward Judd) standing on the cliff looking at the skeleton of the Moon Calf and the Selenites taking the remains away of the Moon Calf. You don't actually see them removing the flesh off the bones. He then follows them up the cliff into a tunnel. Next scene we see Cavor and Kate standing next to the Selenite with a staff at a large door being opened to reveal the rotating crystal. I checked this on the Region 4 copy I have and the scenes are the same. Somehow the running time on the Region 1 says 103 minutes Region 4 says 99 minutes - May have something to do with NTSC version speed). I am going to try and find the VHS copy I have of this movie and see if the footage is the same. I just don't want you ordering the Region 1 if you are looking for the selenites stripping off the flesh when both versions don't show that.
