If you're a fan of YA fiction, and YA horror in particular, Say Her Name is an absolute treat.
I've loved both of Dawson's previous novels (Hollow Pike was brooding and adventuresome; Cruel Summer sassy and blood-smeared), and I'm pleased to say that his third work of fiction didn't disappoint.
Genuinely scary in places, and expertly paced, the novel pays homage to the conventions of the teen horror sub-genre, while simultaneously dragging them into the 21st century. The spirit of Christopher Pike looms large in the characters' snappy dialogue, bitchy standoffs, and hot and heavy romances, while the tightly wound plot satisfies as both a mystery and a spine-tingler.
Main protagonist Bobbie is a particular highlight: a genuinely funny, smart heroine, who actually drives the plot rather than blindly stumbling through it (shockingly rare in the vintage Point Horror books I've been trawling through lately), I loved her. Teen readers will love her too, and I can only hope that rumours of a sequel are not unfounded...
All in all, a great read for young adults and out-and-proud adult fans of YA fiction alike.
